Bringing the curtain down on our 2021 season, Mel Brooks and Susan Stroman gave this 1974 comedy classic new life on stage as a mind-blowing, tap-dancing monster of a musical, which wowed sold out Ogunquit audiences during a limited run in 2013. John Bolton returns to the role of Frederick Frank-un-steen this time matching wits with Sally Struthers as Frau Blucher for a side-splitting, abby-normal comedy extravaganza in the most hilariously haunting of seasonal environments. Bundle up, because this will be a ridiculous hayride to remember!

    ANTHONY CANNARELLA (Ensemble, Swing) is pleased to make his Ogunquit Playhouse debut. A former company artist with Sacramento Ballet, Anthony has soared onto the stage in many featured roles including Ron Cunningham’s Peter Pan, Stephen Mills’ Hamlet, and George Balanchine’s Tarantella. He toured with Amy Siewert’s Imagery, performing Wandering (The Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow), recently performed in Olivia Rodrigo’s film Sour Prom, and has greatly enjoyed choreographing for Sacramento Ballet, Capital Dance Project, and Ballet Project OC. He’d especially like to thank his Mom, Brother, Dad, and partner Isabella for all of their support and love.

    JOHN BOLTON (Dr. Frederick Frankenstein) happily returns to Ogunquit Playhouse reprising the role he played here in 2013.     SALLY STRUTHERS (Frau Blucher) is a two-time Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner for her performance in the groundbreaking TV series All in the Family. She starred in CBS’ spinoff Gloria and 9 to 5 (FOX), and playing recurring roles on Still Standing (CBS), as well as Gilmore Girls (The CW) and Netflix’s four movie revival, and guest starred in Maron (IFC). Sally’s television movies include: A Gun in the House, And Your Name is Jonah, The Great Houdinis, Hey… I’m Alive, In The Best Interest of the Children, Deadly Silence, My Husband is Missing, and Intimate Strangers. Sally co-starred in two legendary motion pictures: Five Easy Pieces with Jack Nicholson, and The Getaway with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. Sally’s first two Broadway shows were Wally’s Cafe with Rita Moreno and James Coco, and Neil Simon’s female version of The Odd Couple with Brenda Vaccaro. For three years she starred as Miss Mamie Lynch on Broadway and on tour in Tommy Tune’s production of Grease, and in the 20th Anniversary Tour of Annie co-starred as Miss Hannigan. Sally was named Best Actress by the Los Angeles Artistic Director Theatre Awards for her role as Louise Seger in the musical, Always, Patsy Cline; won the Ovation Award as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Agnes Gooch in the LA production of Mame, a second Ovation Award for Cinderella, and also won a plaque for ‘Best Actress’ in her 7th Grade Class Play.   • MEL BROOKS (Writer, Composer, Lyricist, Producer) Director, producer, writer and actor, Mel Brooks is the recipient of three Tony Awards (Best Score, Best Book, Best Musical) and two Grammy Awards (Best Musical Show Album and Best Long Form Music Video) for THE PRODUCERS. Mr. Brooks began his distinguished career in 1951 during television's Golden Age as a writer for Sid Caesar on YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS. In 1955 and ‘57, he received Emmy nominations (with others) for Best Comedy Writing on CAESAR'S HOUR, and in 1956 for Best Writing for a Variety or Situation Comedy. In 1952, Brooks wrote sketches for Leonard Sillman's Broadway smash-hit revue, NEW FACES OF 1952, and in 1957, together with Joe Darion, he wrote the book for the Broadway musical SHINBONE ALLEY, which starred Eartha Kitt. In 1962, he wrote the book for the Broadway musical ALL-AMERICAN, starring Ray Bolger. In the'60s, Brooks teamed up with Carl Reiner to write and perform THE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN albums, which became immediate bestsellers. In 1960 and 1961, Brooks and Reiner received Grammy nominations for Best Spoken Word Comedy for 2000 YEARS and Best Comedy Performance for 2000 AND ONE YEARS. In 1997, Brooks and Reiner teamed up again for THE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN IN THE YEAR 2000. Both a book and a CD were released, the CD winning a Grammy Award in 1998 for Best Spoken Word Album: Comedy. In 1964, he wrote and narrated THE CRITIC, a short satire on avant-garde art films, which received an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject. In 1965, Brooks teamed up with Buck Henry to create GET SMART, the long-running television series starring Don Adams and Barbara Feldman. In 1967, Brooks (with others) received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing Achievement in a Comedy-Variety for THE SID CAESAR, IMOGENE COCA, CARL REINER, HOWARD MORRIS SPECIAL. In 1968, he wrote and directed his first feature film, THE PRODUCERS, starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, which earned him an Academy Award for the Best Original Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. He then went on to create a remarkable string of hit comedies. He wrote, directed, and acted in THE TWELVE CHAIRS (1970); co-wrote, directed, and acted in BLAZING SADDLES (1974), and was nominated, along with composer John Morris, for the Best Title Song; co-wrote and directed YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974); co-wrote, directed, and starred in SILENT MOVIE (1976); co-wrote, directed, and starred in HIGH ANXIETY (1977); co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART 1 (1981); produced and starred in TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1983); co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in the sci-fi spoof, SPACEBALLS (1987); co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in LIFE STINKS (1991); co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS (1993); co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT (1995). For three successive seasons, Brooks won the Emmy Award for his role as Uncle Phil on the hit NBC comedy, MAD ABOUT YOU. His visionary film company, Brooksfilms Limited, founded in 1980, has produced some of America's most distinguished films, among them: David Lynch's THE ELEPHANT MAN, David Cronenberg's THE FLY, FRANCES, Richard Benjamin's MY FAVORITE YEAR, and 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, starring Anthony Hopkins and Mr. Brooks' wife Anne Bancroft.

    THOMAS MEEHAN (Book) received the Tony Award for co-writing the book for The Producers (2001) and Hairspray (2003). He received his first Tony Award in 1977 for writing the book of Annie, his first Broadway show, and has written the books for the musicals Rocky, Elf the Musical, Cry-Baby, Chaplin, Bombay Dreams, I Remember Mama, Ain’t Broadway Grand, and Annie Warbucks. In addition, Mr Meehan was a long-time contributor of humor to The New Yorker, an Emmy-Award winning writer of television comedy, and a collaborator on a number of screenplays, including Mel Brooks' Spaceballs and To Be Or Not To Be. Mr Meehan was also a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild. He and his wife, Carolyn, divided their time between a home in Nantucket and an apartment in Greenwich Village, near which, on Hudson Street, she owned and presided over the long-running and near-legendary children's store Peanut Butter & Jane.

    SUSAN STROMAN (Original Direction and Choreography) honored with Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and a record five Astaire Awards, Susan made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2014, directing and choreographing The Merry Widow. Her work on Mel Brooks’ The Producers won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards including Best Direction and Best Choreography. Other Broadway credits include The Scottsboro Boys, Bullets Over Broadway, Big Fish, Crazy for You, Show Boat, Oklahoma!, The Frogs, The Music Man, Thou Shalt Not, and Steel Pier. Off-Broadway credits include The World Goes ‘Round, Flora the Red Menace, and Happiness. She has created ballets for New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Martha Graham Company. She is the recipient of the George Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement in the American Theater and the Theater Hall of Fame.

    JORDON CUNNINGHAM (Associate Music Director) is a New York based Music Director, pianist, and graduate of Penn State University with a MFA in Music Direction. He most recently served on the music team for Diana on Broadway and as Music Director and Conductor for Sound of Music at Asolo Rep. Previously, he was on staff as the Music Assistant and Associate Conductor at the Goodspeed Opera House.     RICHARD LATTA (Lighting Design) OP: Jersey Boys, 42nd Street, Cabaret, Oklahoma!, An American in Paris (IRNE Award Nomination), Grumpy Old Men the Musical. He is currently the longest serving employee at Ogunquit Playhouse, beginning as a crew member in 1985 and serving as a Lighting Designer since 1987. In that time, he's designed hundreds of shows and watched in amazement as the Playhouse evolved from its humble Summer Stock beginnings to a producing entity that presents classics, re-inventions of recent shows, and gives life to brand new productions.   • John Bolton returns as Frederick Fronk-un-steen, with Sally Struthers paying tribute to her friend Cloris Leachman by making Frau Blucher all her own. Joining Bolton and Struthers are Soara-Joye Ross as Elizabeth, Will Burton as Igor, Hannah Cruz as Inga, David Baida as Inspector Kemp, and Zachary James as The Monster. Anthony Cannarella, Jeremiah Ginn, Sarah Elizabeth Gold, Nigel Jamal Hall, Aliah James, Graham Keen, Missy Marion, Erica Peréz-Barton, and Noah Ruebeck round out the Ensemble.

    Young Frankenstein will feature Susan Stroman’s original direction and choreography, lovingly recreated by director Jeff Whiting (Bullets Over Broadway) and choreographer James Gray (CBS’ Broadway is Back) and music direction by Michael Uselmann (Dear Evan Hansen National Tour) and associate Jordon Cunningham (Diana on Broadway).

    With the original Broadway scenic design by Robin Wagner and costume design by William Ivey Long, Young Frankenstein features additional scenic elements by Nate Bertone (Ogunquit Playhouse’s Mystic Pizza), lighting design by Richard Latta (Ogunquit Playhouse’s Spamalot), and sound design by Kevin Heard (Ogunquit Playhouse’s Kinky Boots). Daniel Everett is the Production Stage Manager and Brian Robillard is the Assistant Stage Manager.
