THE PRODUCERS

July 16 - August 9, 2008

The Ogunquit Playhouse is thrilled to be one of the first regional theatres in the country to recreate the Broadway production featuring Robin Wagner’s fantastic Tony-Award winning sets and William Ivey Long’s spectacular Tony award winning costumes in this one time only star studded production of The Producers! The once great Broadway producer Max Bialystock has had a series of box office flops, his most recent a musical adaptation of HAMLET called "Funny Boy". While reviewing Max's financial records, Leopold Bloom, Max's neurotic accountant, figures out that Max is making more money with his flops than with his successes. Max quickly devises a plan to find the worst script and the worst director for his next venture in order to ensure a spectacular flop. And it he doesn’t have to look far. With Springtime for Hitler, a gay romp about Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden", a highly questionable musical written by Franz Leibkind, a Nazi sympathizer, and Roger DeBris, who just so happens to be fond of wearing dresses, the stage is set for failure and farce! In the end, Max and Leo's scheme fails when "Springtime for Hitler" becomes a box office smash and Max and Leo’s troubles begin for real. Don’t miss a moment of the laughs as Mel Brook’s inimitable brand of humor takes audiences for a summertime romp on the Playhouse stage.

REVIEWS

"The first rate production of Mel Brooks' The Producers...one you ought to see." - Portland Press Herald

"The Producers' marks a new pinnacle of achievement in theater for this area... Cory English as Max Bialystock and Andy Taylor as Leo Bloom, the two producers of the show's title, are consummately professional and slick as black ice in their roles...This cast absolutely deserved the standing ovation it received... If you get a chance to get up to Ogunquit it would be worth every penny you have to spend...you'll have a ball!" - Portsmouth Herald

  • Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night.

With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (ANNIE) and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks , The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an "equal opportunity offender!"

  • The Producers – the most Tony®-Award-Winning Musical of All Time – Comes to the Ogunquit Playhouse

    For Immediate Release:

    July 9, 2008

The Ogunquit Playhouse is please to present the most Tony®-Award-Winning musical of all time, Mel Brooks’, The Producers, July 16 through August 9. This sensational production is the first for a regional theatre to feature Robin Wagner’s Tony Award winning Broadway sets and William Ivey Long’s Tony® Award winning costumes.

The smash-hit comedy also features 404 costumes, 13 wigs, 400 props, 27 actors, 16 horny little old ladies, 24 orchestra members and 10,000 beads on the Chrysler dress. The company has three pets and one black cat, nine official show birds, 40 tap shoes, 22 Hitler moustaches, 2,000 hairpins per week, 2 wheelchairs, 6 broken leg casts, 24 Dixon Ticonderoga pencils and one trick sausage!

The Producers stars veteran actor CORY ENGLISH in the roll of the producer Max Bialystock. Cory has just finished a 10 month tour of the UK as Max in The Producers after a year in the same role and production in London’s west end Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Starring in the roll as Max’s hapless accountant Leo Bloom is Andy Taylor. Andy has many Broadway credits and recently starred as Leo in the National Tour of The Producers. Ulla will be played by Broadway actress, Ida Leigh Curtis who also starred in the National Tour in the same roll. Returning to the Ogunquit stage as Roger Debris, is award winning Boston entertainer and Ogunquit favorite, Ryan Landry in the role of Roger Debris. Ryan is a playwright with his troupe The Gold Dust Orphans and has written over 30 original plays. Last year he played Edna to rave reviews in the electric production of Hairspray at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

Don’t miss this hilarious story about Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, who try to oversell a Broadway flop only to incur complications when the show unexpectedly turns out to be a hit. Highlights include “Springtime for Hitler” and “Where Did We Go Right?” You’ll enjoy every insane minute! The magic continues at the Ogunquit Playhouse with a glorious production of My Fair Lady (August 13 - September 6), and Les Misérables starring Andrea McArdle and Ryan Landry(September 10 – October 12).

Main Stage ticket prices range from $39-58 per show and are available through the Box Office at 207-646-5511 or online at www.ogunquitplayhouse.org.

  • The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.
