SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE

MAY 16 - JUN 9, 2018

The Ogunquit Playhouse is thrilled to be collaborating with the show’s original producing team on an all-new incarnation of the record breaking Broadway hit Smokey Joe’s Cafe, which heads to New York City following its Ogunquit run. The Grammy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated smash made history as Broadway’s longest running musical revue and celebrates the best songs of the legendary songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Their generation-defining songs climbed the Billboard charts and provided hit after hit for icons like Elvis Presley, Ben E. King, The Coasters, and The Drifters. With themes of love won, lost and imagined, their songs touched global audiences with wit and slice-of-life emotions. Audiences will be treated to more than 30 show stopping tunes including classics like “On Broadway,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Potion #9,” and “Spanish Harlem."  The show will be directed and choreographed by Emmy Award-winner and Tony Award-nominee Josh Bergasse whose credits include Broadway's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and On the Town, Fox's "So You think You Can Dance" and NBC's "Smash."

JERRY LEIBER AND MIKE STOLLER Over the course of a 61-year partnership, Jerry Leiber (d. 2011) and Mike Stoller created enduring classics in a variety of genres including rhythm & blues, pop, country, jazz, cabaret, and-perhaps most notably- rock 'n' roll. They wrote the Elvis Presley hits "Hound Dog," "Loving You," and "Jailhouse Rock" as well as all of the Coasters' hits, including "Searchin'," "Young Blood," "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," "Poison Ivy" and "Little Egypt." In 1955, Atlantic Records signed Leiber and Stoller to the first independent production deal, forever changing the course of the record industry. Leiber and Stoller's songs and productions were constantly on the charts during the next decade. Aside from the Coasters' many hits, there were Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" and "I (Who Have Nothing)"; The Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," "Dance With Me," and "On Broadway"; LaVern Baker's "Saved"; and Ruth Brown's "Lucky Lips." During this same period, while Leiber and Stoller were producing the Clovers ("Love Potion # 9"), Jay and the Americans ("Only In America"), and Chuck Jackson ("I Keep Forgettin'"), other artists were having hits with Leiber and Stoller compositions. There was Wilbert Harrison with "Kansas City," the Drifters with "Fools Fall In Love," Dion with "Ruby Baby," Peggy Lee with "I'm A Woman," "Is That All There Is?," and Edith Piaf with "L'Homme est la Moto." Leiber and Stoller have received countless awards and honors, including: induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1985) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1987), having their star placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and their handprints embedded into the Hollywood Rockwalk (1994), receiving a Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album for Smokey Joe's Cafe (1995), a NARAS Trustees Award (Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement, 1999), a Johnny Mercer Award (National Academy of Popular Music, 2000), and a Songwriters Hall of Fame Towering Song Award for "Stand By Me" (2012). • Item descriptiIt is rare to find a set of creative collaborators who have reached the popularity and longevity of success that Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller experienced in their musical career. Rarer still, is for this harmonious partnership to have lasted a lifetime, with both creators never lacking in passion or ideas to bring forth one genre-defying smash hit after another, until the recent passing of Jerry Leiber in 2011. The legendary collaboration began in 1950, when the two were both 17, living in the hot bed of music innovation, Los Angeles. Jerry Leiber was a natural wordsmith, crafting line after line of lyrics ready to be set to music. Mike Stoller on the other hand, was a classically trained composer, but both shared a deep love for jazz and R&B that heavily influenced the creators’ music style.

Set in a time of civil, political and cultural unrest that punctuated the 1950s and 1960s, Leiber and Stoller found a way to cut through the differences and opposition to produce sounds and lyrics to dazzle, delight, and perhaps even help distract the masses. With wars raging across seas in Vietnam and the arms race between the US and Soviet Union during the Cold War, to the battles faced at home against segregation and inequality, the American people were divided and downtrodden. By dabbling in music from different backgrounds—ranging from rhythm and blues, jazz, country and gospel—Leiber and Stoller helped spur a movement and sound that captured the energy and desire for change that the American people desired.

The song that arguably put the songwriting and record producing duo on the map was the electrifying tune “Hound Dog” in 1953. The song was originally performed and inspired by the 350-pound “blues belter,” Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton in 1956, and upon meeting and hearing Big Mama Thornton, the duo frantically wrote the song in twelve to fifteen minutes, desperate to capture her brusque attitude and voice in song. Leiber scribbled out the lyrics as fast as his hand could write, while Stoller created a rhythm banging on the car while driving, and the song was written that same afternoon upon meeting her. Unbeknownst to Stoller and Leiber, “Hound Dog” would reach new levels of fame when it was performed by Elvis Presley in 1956, jump-starting the rock ‘n’ roll revolution. “Hound Dog” enjoyed a seat at the top of the charts for 11 weeks—unheard of in those times. Presley would go on to record more than twenty Leiber and Stoller songs. But this King of rock ‘n’ roll wasn’t the only star to have recorded Leiber and Stoller songs, the impressive list includes: The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, James Brown, Little Richard. Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and the Comets, Barbra Streisand, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Tom Jones, Edith Piaf, Bobby Darin, Chet Atkins, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, B.B. King, and Otis Redding, to name a few.

The creative genius that inspired and fueled Leiber and Stoller’s work appear to have never stopped, churning out record-breaking hits that have resulted in accolades ranging from the induction into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1985, the Record Producers' Hall of Fame in 1986 and eventually the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Their independent record label, Red Bird Records, highlighted their eye for talent resulting in ten out of their first thirty singles making it to the Top Forty—an amazing feat for a record label so young and new.

The original Broadway production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller proved its enduring value by becoming Broadway’s longest running musical revue with over 2,000 performances between the years 1995 to 2000, as well as earning critical acclaim through a Grammy Award and multiple Tony Award nominations. This production will breathe new life into the much beloved show. The Ogunquit Playhouse is honored to re-introduce Smokey Joe’s Cafe and work with the original producing team conceived by Jack Viertel, Stephen Helper, Richard Frankel, Tom Viertel, Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, and Mike Stoller himself, to create a production that is sure to have audience members singing and dancing in their seat. What’s more, the show will feature more than 30 classic songs including “I’m a Woman,” “Hound Dog,” “On Broadway,” “Stand By Me,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Love Potion #9.” Smokey Joe’s Cafe is the perfect embodiment of the legacy Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller gave, and continues to contribute, to the rock ‘n’ roll music scene and beyond. Following the run of Smokey Joe’s Cafe here in Ogunquit, the production and cast will transfer to New York City this summer as the Big Apple welcomes Smokey Joe’s Cafe back for the first time since the original production closed almost 20 years ago.on

  • Whenever I begin work on a new musical, I start with what most directors start with: research. I can assure you that I’ve never had more fun in my entire career than doing my research for this show. Since Smokey Joe’s Cafe is a musical review of rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues hits by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, my research consisted of spending dozens of hours listening to the extraordinary songs of this songwriting duo. There are so many different versions of these classic songs. Of course there are the versions that we’re all familiar with, but then when you keep digging you find there are other recordings of the same songs from artists that you’ve never heard of, even new recordings from current artists. It was then that I began to realize just how deeply these songs are woven into our culture; some of them have been recorded by artists throughout the last seven decades. But these aren’t just songs, they were the soundtrack of a generation, of multiple generations, and that’s why artists today are still recording this music, and why we love to listen to it.

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller changed the trajectory of both rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Their music not only revolutionized popular music but also influenced popular culture. They were a driving force in the crossover of blues and R&B into popular music. Among the artists they regularly wrote for were The Drifters, The Coasters, Elvis Presley, Ben E. King and Peggy Lee to name a few, and the song writing team has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

We knew that by reviving this show we were going to need to make some changes. The very successful original production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe was developed with the unique and astounding talents of that original cast. We knew we couldn’t replicate those performances, so instead we searched for a new cast that would be unique and astounding in their own ways, and we would build this production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe specifically for them. And luckily, we’ve had a secret weapon to help us achieve our goal: Mike Stoller. One of the most wonderful aspects of this experience for the entire company, myself included, has been to have Mr. Stoller in rehearsal with us. He’s been able to coach us through each song so we have the right feel for the sound and right understanding of the lyrics. He’s also been able to work with our Music Director Sonny Paladino and the rest of the band to help us develop this production with incredible authenticity. I can confidently speak for everyone on the team when I say, ‘Thank You, Mike! You are a gentleman, a prince, a genius and a national treasure.’
