He is the 2006 recipient of the Writersí Guild of America Ian McClellan Hunter Award for Lifetime Achievement. His current project is a stage musical celebrating the life of western star Roy Rogers.

RICK ELICE (Book) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick) and won five, more than any play of the season. Itís currently playing in New York and on tour across North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), currently touring North America, with productions in Europe and South America. In 2014, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego presented the world premiere of his new musical, Dog and Pony (music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker). Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe, and Super Fly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend, Bill T. Jones. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now.

BOB GAUDIO (Music) wrote his first hit, ìWho Wears Short Shorts,î at 15, for The Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the bandís principal songwriter. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (ìSilence is Goldenî), the Walker Brothers (ìThe Sun Ainít Gonna Shine Anymoreî) and Lauryn Hill (ìCanít Take My Eyes Off Youî). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboardís longest-charted singles (54 weeks), ìOh, What a Night.î A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as a quintessential music-maker.î To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership on

    a handshake.

BOB CREWE (Lyrics) ìNew York was pregnant in the fifties,î says Bob Crewe, ìgestating with possibilities.î Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadnít yet been invented. In 1957 they wrote and produced ìSilhouettesî for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannonís ìTallahassee Lassieî and Billy & Lillieís ìLah Dee Da.î Creweís 1960ís unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. ìSherry, ìBig Girls Donít Cry,î ìWalk Like a Man,î ìCandy Girl,î ìRonnieî ñ all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) ìëCanít Take My Eyes Off of You,î which eventually became the centuryís fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesly Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fondaís film, Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with Music to Watch Girls By. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with ìMy Eyes Adored Youî by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelleís ìLady Marmaladeî (#1, July í75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June í01)ÖDavid Ritz

  • The rise of original Four Seasons members, Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio and Nick Massi, to fame does not follow the traditional rags-to-riches storyline with a simple, happy ending. However, through sheer grit and exceptional talent, these Jersey boys paved the way for future rock ‘n’ roll generations with their eclectic sound and octave jumping vocals. They would go on to craft lyrics and music that connected with the young, the old, the working class, and broke the through the racial divide of music at the time by focusing on real issues in people’s lives, primarily the ebb and flow of romantic relationships. Rather than perfectly mesh the groups voices and styles together like other harmonizing vocal bands of the time, for example Beach Boys and the Beatles, the band relied on its distinct set of voices and personalities to develop a sound all its own. The band fought for its spot on top charts, and faced frequent rejection before being played on everyone’s radio in the mid-1960s.

One of the obstacles to achieving fame, was the group’s inability to find the perfect stage name, in fact, it took the group 18 tries–used individually and collectively in all–before choosing ‘The Four Seasons.’ Other names include ‘The Four Lovers,’ ‘Frankie Valley and the Travelers,’ ‘The Village Voices,’ and ‘The Topics.’ The iconic band name was taken from a small town bowling alley, the 4 Seasons, in which the band auditioned for a lounge bar gig and was ironically turned down. In true Jersey boys spirit, they decided they would take something away from the ordeal and that became their iconic name. The Four Seasons enjoyed 13 top-ten hits between 1962 and 1967, despite having to compete with the British band invasion that swept across the country.

The musical shines light on all four narratives of the band members’ versions of their time together, as they remember it. Growing up in Newark, New Jersey the members came from working-class Italian-American families, in neighborhoods where trouble could easily be found if you weren’t careful. Interestingly enough, Hollywood actor Joe Pesci was the one to introduce Frankie Valli and Tommy Devito to Bob Gaudio, which reveals how close-knit the community really was. Several of The Four Seasons members held prison records for minor offenses, including leads Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, but were able to keep the sordid secret away from the media’s attention. After all, the band represented a clean-cut group of hard-working American boys and any contradiction to this image could have potentially destroyed their careers.

Down the road, the band learned that DeVito had been amassing quite a large debt with a loan shark, but luckily ties with known mob boss Angelo Carlo helped the band squeeze out of the situation unscathed. However, part of the deal was that Valli and Gaudio would buy Tommy Devito out of the band and assume all remaining debts, if he agreed to leave the group. In 1965, Nick Massi also decided to call it quits, however The Four Seasons carried on with various members and Valli trying his hand at a solo career.

It was the Gaudio and Valli’s dream to have The Four Seasons story told in either film or another format for the masses, so when Broadway producers approached them about the opportunity to have their trials and tribulations be turned into a Broadway musical, the performers leapt at the chance. What made the making of Jersey Boys especially unique was the fact that the producers were able to pull aside each Four Seasons member and create a storyline from intimate talks with all four leads that revealed each musicians experience in the band, often with conflicting narratives. The musical opened on November 6, 2005 at the August Wilson Theatre and would go on to win both a Tony and Grammy Award in the category of Best Musical, not to mention garner a record-breaking 11-year run on Broadway. Jersey Boys has been seen by over 24 million people in 10 countries, including Australia, South Korea and South Africa. The Ogunquit Playhouse is proud to be one of two regional theatres to have the privilege to produce the show to its audience. Through infectious, nostalgic music Jersey Boys reminds us that there are several sides to any story, and that fame has its fair share of costs.

  • August is a gorgeous time in Maine. The warmth of the sun wraps its arms around you for 31 days straight. There’s an anticipatory energy in the air as vacationers squeeze every last moment of beach time out of their summer before Labor Day comes around, and high school students drape themselves over the back rows of chilly movie theatres in order to escape the watchful eye of their parents who are anxious for school to start back up. August brings a “new year” for many families, and in August of 1962, teenagers and their parents from all over the world were given the gift of a new voice of a generation with the coming of The Four Seasons’ first nationally released single, and subsequent number one hit, “Sherry.”

What was this sound? Who owned that glorious young voice? Why were we suddenly hearing it on jukeboxes in every soda shop, grocery store and post office in town? Sherry is a song that’s upbeat, joyous and just downright fun. It’s a story about a boy wanting a girl to come out and dance and that’s all you needed. The country yearned for this musical lift as the Cold War raged on and breaking news reports cluttered the airwaves. By the time The Four Seasons second hit, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” made it to the radio, the United States found themselves in the throes of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and teens and parents could see themselves on the brink of nuclear war. The Four Seasons’ music allowed these families to step outside of the fear and tension that such a massive threat brought into their homes, and celebrate the simple joys in life – Boy meets Girl, it doesn’t work out – he moves on – let’s write a song and dance about it! At this time, the social impact of The Four Seasons was most deeply felt in the blue collar suburbs of places like Maine and New Jersey, as so eloquently stated in Bob Gaudio’s last speech of Act One, which is my favorite of the entire show and a perfect example of the poetic genius of Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice.

Cut to 42 years later – August 2004. A group of established creative powerhouses and raw new talent unite in a basement at the University of California San Diego. This modest, low-lit space will become the canvas for Brickman, Elice and Des McAnuff to interweave the blue collar stories of The Four Seasons with their now extensive catalogue of number one hits that live in the heartbeat of a generation. They chose a Rashomon approach, allowing for each band member to give you their perspective of “how it all happened,” for every story truly has a dozen ways of being told.

I remember each and every moment of that day and the many incredible days to come. The first time that David Noroña (our original Frankie) stepped up to the solo mic in rehearsal to sing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” you could feel the entire room hold their breath for three minutes until the final dissonant chord of the tune echoed throughout the room. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

No matter when we first came upon them, be it in 1962 or 2004, these songs speak to all of us. They pulse with the rhythm of our heartbeats and represent the simplest of joys and struggles in our daily human interactions. The girl that you lost, the love that you simply can’t get away from; raw human interactions that can only be told through these melodies.

After that first run through, every person in the room knew that we were a part of something that would have a massive cultural impact. Jersey Boys was born, and August brought another number one hit for The Four Seasons.

Now we leap forward to August 2018. Fourteen years to the day that I first found myself involved in this story in a basement in California, we embark on rehearsals for a new exploration of this magnificent story of family and friendship, and now it’s your turn to view it with fresh eyes. Allow yourself to take all of the experiences that you’ve had with The Four Seasons, Jersey Boys, the music, the story, or the lack thereof and find YOUR Rashomon moment. What has stuck with you? What are you looking forward to reliving and seeing in a new light? What makes this timeless story special to you? Let tonight be your “August” – a new start for you with the material. What will be the story that will stay in your heart after tonight?

I’m so very grateful for the opportunity that Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe have given to all of us to continue the journey of exploring and celebrating their story with new generations of theatre goers and music lovers. As I can personally attest, the music and the heartbeat of Jersey Boys will never leave you. This show truly embraces the notion that “family is everything,” and I am thrilled to welcome you into ours.
