FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (2017)

OCT 4 - OCT 29, 2017

The Ogunquit Playhouse is honored to be collaborating with Tim Rice and the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival on the rollout of the North American premiere of the epic new musical From Here to Eternity, based on James Jones’ acclaimed novel with lyrics by Tim Rice, book by Donald Rice and Bill Oakes, and music by Stuart Brayson. Set in Hawaii in the weeks before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, this epic tale follows the powerful story of two U.S soldiers, the soulful Private Prewitt and ardent Sergeant Warden, as they embark on doomed and dangerous love affairs with the wrong women. As the infamous date of December 7th approaches, the claustrophobic world of the four lovers and the desperation of the soldiers of G Company splinter amidst an escalating war. The compelling story of men at war along with a fantastic new score is not to be missed.

STUART BRAYSON (Composer) was born in Gateshead in the northeast of England. He left the north to pursue a career in pop music as a singer/songwriter with his band POP in the late 80s. He approached Tim Rice one day in London with a demo tape and a friendship began. After POP nearly made the big time Stuart quit the rock and roll life to pursue a career writing musicals, always keeping in close contact with Tim. Stuart then wrote the musical The Boy Who Wanted More about his experiences in the pop biz, which he produced, directed, and starred in to much acclaim at Buxton Festival and later at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre. This show was then commissioned by Ed Wilson for the National Youth Theatre of GB. His next show Mata Hari about the glamorous and misunderstood female spy cum courtesan received its world premiere at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre with promise of a West End future which never happened. After that Stuart wrote nineteen musicals including Wall Street, Random Harvest, Byron, The Great Train Robbery, Ed Wood, King Pit (recently previewed at the Sage Gateshead), Jimmy Mac (recently premiered at Gaiety Theatre, Isle of Man as part of Theatre Fest 15), and many, many more which remain so far unproduced in a big box in his back room, but he lives in hope. One of the 19 musicals in that box however was called From Here to Eternity, which went on to open at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2013, produced by and with lyrics by his mentor, Tim Rice. In the last year or so the cast album of From Here to Eternity has topped the UK charts and the film of the West End show has been seen in cinemas around the world. Stuart is excited that a brand new production of From Here to Eternity will receive its American premiere as part of the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival in the summer of 2016.

PETER HOBBS (Music Coordinator) grew up in Buckinghamshire, England. As a self-taught guitarist, he started out playing and touring in rock bands before concentrating on songwriting and studio production. His music has been featured in numerous films, TV shows, and ad campaigns and he is currently producing a new album for Tim Rice called “Lute.”

BILL OAKES (Book) As a native of Nottingham, England, Bill first made his reputation in New York as head of Robert Stigwood’s record company, RSO. With a roster of artists that included Eric Clapton and the Bee Gees, RSO quickly became America’s most successful independent label. But it was Hollywood that soon beckoned, in the form of two ground-breaking movies, Saturday Night Fever and Grease. As music supervisor, the albums he created for these films remain the two best-selling soundtracks of all time. Bill won Grammy Award for Saturday Night Fever and an American Music Award for Grease. He also supervised soundtracks for (among others) Alan Parker’s Fame and George Lucas’ The Empire Strikes Back. As a producer, Bill’s film credits include, for Robert Stigwood, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Grease 2 and Staying Alive, again with John Travolta, directed by Sylvester Stallone, and Universal’s The Little Rascals, which he made for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Bill’s screen-writing credits include Life and Soul (Granada TV), Chromium Blue (Showtime) and FAB (his film about the Beatles) and he is currently writing Trafalgar, a feature film about Horatio Nelson. For the stage, he is adapting Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and collaborating on Glam!, a musical celebration of the glam-rock era.

DONALD RICE (Book) was born in Oxford, England, and studied at Edinburgh University. He is the writer and director of the award-winning short films Traffic Warden and I Am Bob (long-listed for an Academy Award), as well as the feature film Cheerful Weather For The Wedding (co-written with Mary Henely Magill). He has worked for HartSharp Entertainment in New York and for Stephen Poliakoff on the Emmy award-winning The Lost Prince.

TIM RICE (Lyrics) has been writing lyrics for musical theatre and related enterprises since 1965. Ogunquit Playhouse to Stage From Here to Eternity

Ogunquit, ME — The Ogunquit Playhouse is honored to be part of the North American rollout of the new musical From Here to Eternity, on stage October 4 through 29. The musical is based on the acclaimed novel (which also became a multi-Academy Award-winning film), by James Jones with lyrics by Tim Rice, book by Donald Rice and Bill Oakes and music by Stuart Brayson. As part of its development path to Broadway, Sir Tim Rice is collaborating with the Ogunquit creative team to mount this compelling new musical set in Hawaii in the weeks before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. “The epic story by WWII veteran James Jones, From Here to Eternity, is one of the most searing, honest and romantic views of the men and women who served our country during World War II. The way in which this story had to be told more than 60 years ago due to censorship, softened some of the reality of military life at that time. Today, we are able to tell the story as it was originally intended, revealing the grit and intrigue of military life that Mr. Jones experienced. It has been a great honor to collaborate with Sir Tim Rice, Donald Rice, Brett Smock and our entire creative team on this new musical adaptation to tell this iconic American story in a new way,” said Ogunquit Playhouse Executive Artistic Director Bradford Kenney.

This epic tale follows the powerful story of two U.S soldiers, the soulful Private Prewitt played by Derek Carley and ardent Sergeant Warden, played by Kevin Aichele, as they embark on doomed and dangerous love affairs with the wrong women. The sultry wife of G Company’s commanding officer, Karen Holmes, is played by Robyn Hurder, and Lorene, the beautiful escort who is looking to make a better life for herself, is played by Jenna Nicole Schoen. As the infamous date of December 7th approaches, the claustrophobic world of the four lovers and the desperation of the soldiers of G Company splinter amidst an escalating war. The compelling story of men at war along with a fantastic new score is not to be missed.
